  • Computer: Lab Academy will work with Window 98 and newer operating systems.  Although it will work with Macintosh computers, some of the programs taught are only available in PC format at this time.

  • Browser: Lab Academy will work with most popular browsers (i.e Internet Explorer and Firefox).

  • Internet: Broadband internet is required.  Schools should require the student to use the School Video option while using our program at school rather than the Home Video to prevent bandwidth load problems at schools.  One-time setup is required for each school computer.  Usually a single shared DSL or cable account will work for the computer lab.  Students working from home will use the Home Video option which does not need the one-time video setup.

  • Student Internet Security: At school, it is recommended to use a firewall (other than Windows Firewall) to only allow our designated IP addresses once school begins.  You can filter your lab by adding a router (with a built-in firewall) where your internet comes into your computer lab (turn off the DHCP management so it doesn't conflict with your main router/access point).  Your existing router or access point may already be designed to limit access to specific IP's (just needs setup), but will limit all users connected after that point. This hardware version firewall prevents internet access to other web sites and internet tools for supervision purposes.  Note: You may need a separate internet service account for your computer lab to prevent slower office and teacher surfing.

  • Additional Software for Student Use:   Almost all the fully functional programs the student will learn are available for free.  This saves the school and the family a tremendous amount of money!  The programs can be downloaded on school computers at the beginning of the year.  A checklist web page with download links and brief instructions easily allows the beginning of year setup (and mid-year computer additions) from one convenient location.   Parents can install the supplementary programs on the home computer as needed.  A direct link to the necessary program and install instructions are available within the course.   Students are more likely to become proficient when they can also use the program at home!  An exception to free programs is keyboarding software.  Most schools use specific keyboarding software that dovetail into spelling words or curriculum themes. Most students are already familiar with the school's program and can benefit from the practice content.  Schools may need to sell parents keyboarding software so lower grade students can use the same program from home.   Instructions for a free alternate are included.
